Advanced Motion Design
Spring 2020 | 10:30–1:10

Exercises

E1. Bouncing Ball

Create a 10 to 15 second video of a ball bouncing. Consider the scene and the style. What is the story? Include a title and end credits scene that is additional time to the 10 to 15 seconds.

E2. Patterning

Create an animated, radial pattern using expressions. You should have at least 5 layers in the pattern.

E3. Navigating Space

Using the radial pattern you made in E2, introduce 3D space and a camera. Us the camera to investigate and show the 3D.

E4. Construct a Letter

Construct the first letter of your name in Cinema 4D using primitives. Make sure there is some basic scene that your letter exists in, not just floating in space. Make a short video showing the construction in After Effects using a camera.

E5. Motion Studies

Capture ten different motions for between 5 and 10 seconds each. The motion can be repetitive. Consider the cropping, depth, angle, scale, contrast, lighting for each motion you are capturing. The motion could be from nature, people, animals, machines, or staged. Sequence the 10 clips together for the final video.

E6. Motion Tracking

Choose one of your motion studies as your base footage and create 2 new videos.

The first video will track the movement with a single word that relates to the movement being shown. The movement of the word should be directly tracked to the movement in the footage. Use only two colors (foreground and background) and do not show the base footage in the final video.

The second video should show your captured motion interacting with text. The text could be the word you used previously or could be something new. Do not use the first video with the original footage shown in the background.

E7. Rotoscoping

Use a different motion study as your base footage and add elements to the video through layering. The elements can be text, images, or shapes but should relate to the original footage or an idea.

E8. Shia Labeouf

Use the provided footage and put Shia Labeouf into a new scene. The footage and the scene should feel like they were shot at the same time which means you need to consider lighting, color, and other aspects of both layers.

Projects - Variety Track

1a - Type Specimen

Printed type specimens take a wide range of approaches in design and content but the goal remains the same, showcase the typeface. For this project you will choose a typeface and create a 0:30 to 1:00 type specimen video. The content is up to you but the video show the characteristics of the type, different uses, what makes it unique, etc. The video should have sound.

Project 1b: Animated Infographic

Create a 0:30 to 1:00 moving infographic using data from the 2019 AIGA Census. The infographic should not just be a flat infographic animated but should use the motion to emphasize the data or help explain the narrative you are creating. The video should have sound.

Project 2a: Explainer Video

Create a 1:30 to 2:00 video explaining something. This could be a task (baking a cake), an idea (gravity), a service (renting on airbnb), etc. The goal is to take something seemingly complex and distill it into a short video. This video should be targeted to a specific audience and have sound.

Project 2b: Public Service Announcement

Create a 1:30 to 2:00 video raises awareness about a current issue (gun control, climate change, voting, etc.). A secondary goal of the video would be to change the viewers opinion about the issue. This video should be targeted to a specific audience and have sound.

Project 3a: Choreography

An essential part of most motion design is sound. How does the visual interact with the aural? Create a 0:30 to 1:00 video that visualizes a piece of instrumental music. The video can take many forms but should not feel like an animated scroll of sheet music.

Project 3b: Place

Find a place that you are interested in. This could be a place you visit everyday that some would consider mundane or a place that has special meaning to you. Document this place through photographs, videos, audio, sketches, etc. looking for what makes it unique. Take that documentation and translate it into a 0:30 to 1:00 video that describes (not shows) the place you chose.

Projects - Focus Track

Project 1 & 2 - Event Identity (Overall)

Choose one of the following events: The Academy Awards, Newport Jazz Festival, Banff Mountain Film Festival, or Graphic Design: Now in Production. Research the event and find a concept that is not based on current or previous design work. You will create a range of motion pieces for various platforms to promote the event. The pieces should respond to the specific platform or format and be unique while existing within the same branding system.
